The LNK615DG (LinkSwitch) is one of the most popular Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) used in AC/DC converters, offline switchers, and offline adapters. This particular IC offers integrated switch mode power supply circuitry that provides efficiency, cost competitive and safe operation in AC/DC power converter applications. The combination of the LinkSwitch and a few external components provide the ideal small form factor, low cost, and efficient design solution for AC/DC power adapters, offline adapters, and offline switchers.
The LNK615DG is a highly integrated power switching device with a unique combination of features that can deliver up to 2.25 W of output power (2.0 W for universal input models) when connected to an isolated flyback transformer. This IC contains an integrated high voltage switched-mode power supply (SMPS) and an integrated low side gate drive circuit. It also has an integrated temperature compensation circuit and built-in thermal shutdown protection. With its low cost and small form factor, the LinkSwitch makes it ideal for use in universal input, offline adapters, and offline switchers.
The working principle of the LNK615DG is based on the switched mode power supply topology. This device consists of an integrated power MOSFET, an isolated feedback winding, and an isolated feedback compensation network. The isolated feedback winding provides the voltage feedback to the control circuit, while the isolated feedback compensation network provides the necessary stability and thus enables the power MOSFET to operate in a stable, regulated mode. The power MOSFET switches in response to the control signals generated by the IC. When the MOSFET is turned on, a high voltage spike is generated and this spike is used to power the load. When the MOSFET switches off, the high voltage spike is dissipated by the feedback winding.
In addition to the features mentioned above, the LNK615DG has improved features such as ultra-low noise, improved transient response, and output power (up to 3.2 W for universal input models). The IC also includes protection features such as auto-restart, output over-voltage, output over-current, and input over-voltage.
