The LT1640HCN8#PBF is a Hot Swap Controllers, or PMIC device, that represents a cutting edge technology developed to improve the performance of servers, communications hubs and rack-mounted systems. It integrates several low voltage power-switching features that greatly reduce the need for additional digital or analog circuitry. This device, with its unique current limit, inrush control and short-circuit detection features, can provide immediate system protection against unexpected faults and helps ensure that equipment damages are avoided when using hot-swapping applications.
The LT1640HCN8#PBF is a hot-swap controller capable of safely inserting and removing loads from live supplies without risk of disruption to the load. The device integrates both current-limit and inrush-current-limit circuits that protect the load from extremes of supply voltage, power sources, and/or changes in load conditions. The LT1640HCN8#PBF is designed to control the inrush current and a continuous current limit without severing the ground or in-rush connections during a fault or change in load condition. As a result, the device helps prevent supply disruption to downstream devices while providing the necessary protection.
The LT1640HCN8#PBF device is available in a 8-pin PDIP or MSOP package that allows operation at temperatures ranging from -55°C to 125°C. It further features an integrated inrush control mux that switches between two inrush current limit thresholds at a predetermined switch-over threshold, giving added flexibility to achieve an optimized power-up sequence. The device also incorporates a 10-bit adjustable A/D threshold & comparator that allows for a precise 12-bit user-programmable current limit. Additional features include hot-swap enable, fault output / status, open-drain N-FET output and programmable soft lockout.
The LT1640HCN8#PBF features a turn-on switch current limit, known as peak-stage limit, which operates in the rising edge of the voltage applied to the drain of the external N-channel switch. This enables the device to limit peak current during hot-swap power supply insertion events. The sink output stage of the LT1640HCN8#PBF can be enabled by an external logic signal to ensure safe hot-swap control of data-bank units, as well as any other load step. The device also incorporates an over-current protection function that is triggered when the current through the external N-channel MOSFET exceeds the level set by the user-programmable current-limit reference. The LT1640HCN8#PBF also features a fault output signal that provides the user with a status indication when an overload or overtemperature occurs.
In addition, the LT1640HCN8#PBF device provides a programmable soft lockout facility. This feature allows the user to program the device to remain in the off-state until the VADJ voltage goes above its internal trip threshold, thus preventing any uncontrolled power-up events. Furthermore, the device also incorporates an open-drain N-FET output stage, allowing the device to control certain types of current measurement circuits or to drive external logic circuits. This device is optimised for 12V input systems and can be configured to support up to 24V input systems with additional external components.
The LT1640HCN8#PBF device is an ideal solution for hot-swap power rails applications, such as data backups, data-hub racks, telecom systems and server applications.
