LT4250HCN8 is a high current hot swap controller with integrated power MOSFET. It offers adjustable current limit control and low voltage operation while minimizing components and board area. It is ideal for protecting against faults in power supplies, preventing system overvoltage shutdown, and protecting down-stream ICs in applications requiring hot-swap capability.

Working principle:
The LT4250HCN8 uses a MOSFET to control the current through a load. The MOSFET is configured with a gate-source voltage of 0.8V, ensuring that the load remains off until it is connected to the rail and the gate-source voltage rises above the threshold level. Once the MOSFET is turned on, the on-state resistance of the MOSFET and the load current determine the voltage drop across the MOSFET. The current limit is regulated by comparing the voltage drop across the MOSFET to an internal, adjustable voltage reference.
The MOSFET is protected by a shutdown circuit that engages if the input voltage exceed a preset threshold. This prevents over-voltage conditions from damaging the load and the circuit. Additionally, an under-voltage lockout circuit monitors the input rail voltage to ensure that it is above the minimum allowed level. If the rail voltage falls below the minimum level, the shutdown circuit will engage, preventing the MOSFET from turning on.
An additional circuit called a Soft-Start circuit allows the MOSFET to turn on gradually instead of immediately, reducing inrush current. The Soft-Start circuit can be adjusted to allow the current limit to be set to the desired level, as well as to reduce the voltage drop across the MOSFET to a preset level.
