Operating Principle of LT8705EFE

The LT8705EFE operates in current mode. During the switching cycle, when the inductor current reaches the Forcing Adaptive On-Time (FOT) set point, the internal logic circuitry stops the switching and this is the end of the feedback cycle. The switching time is determined by an internal logic block and an internal loop filter. The lower the input voltage and the higher the output voltage, the longer the switch time.

During the OFF period, the current in the inductor begins to decrease and when it reaches the FOT set point, the comparator switches again and the current cycle repeats. In continuous conduction mode (CCM) operations, the inductor current is always above the reset threshold so the current will be maintained above the initial value. Due to a certain amount of ripple, the average inductor current is determined by the output capacitance, ESR and the current limit.
