When a voltage at the input port exceeds the breakdown voltage (Vbr) of the device, the MAP4KE18A diode quickly turns on and begins to conduct. The device functions as a clamp limiting voltage at the breakdown voltage level, therefore, preventing damage to the connected device. The device has a bypass diode connected in series with the diode which provides discharge path to the leakage current.
The MAP4KE18A device can absorb high energy pulses up to 1000W if the applied voltage and current waveform is low in amplitude. The device is designed to limit voltages to the breakdown voltage level and absorb transient energy which could otherwise damage ICs or other sensitive components. The device has a fast response time of less than 1ns.
