The voltage-to-digital conversion is accomplished using a multistep process called successive approximation, where the incoming analog signal is compared to an internal analog reference and then incrementally converted to a digital equivalent. The successively generated output is monitored with each step until the measured voltage is equal to the reference voltage, at which time the entire process is completed and the resulting digital word is output. The advantage of this method is that it is much faster than some other techniques such as integration or sigma-delta conversion.
