Principle of Operation

The MAX1204BEPP+ operates on a single 5.5 V supply and consumes only 600 µA in standby mode. The device performs a sample-and-hold operation of the signal and then uses the sample voltage to drive a resistor ladder that produces digital codes. The device then uses track-and-hold circuitry (not shown) to capture the next sample after the conversion is complete.The MAX1204BEPP+ utilizes a Successive Approximation Register (SAR) architecture to perform the conversion. In SAR architecture, successive approximation is applied to the analog input signal until the output code is fixed. The output code is compared to the actual input voltage, and the difference is shifted off one bit at a time from the MSB until the spread between the input voltage and the output code is reduced to zero, thus producing the digital output code corresponding to the input voltage.
