Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) are an integral part of any data acquisition system. The MAX1241CCSA+ is an advanced low power, low cycle latency, low-cost, low-noise 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) with a slew-limited, low-pass-filter (LPF) input buffer, 1- to 8-KHz bandwidth configurable LPF, and multiple highly integrated features. It is designed for use in applications such as industrial process control, medical and hearing devices, instrumentation and signal acquisition, and automotive systems.
The MAX1241CCSA+ operates from a single 1.8V to 5.5V supply with a single +3.3V or +2.5V I/O supply and provides resolutions from 5-bits to 12-bits. Its architecture combines an ultra-low power comparator combined with a high voltage, low-phase-noise and low-distortion successive-approximation (SAR) ADC. This enables the device to achieve low-cycle latency (8-bit successive approximations in 20 ms and 12-bit resolutions in 37 ms) while using a low-power operation mode (640 nW at 1KHz) with 65 dB dynamic range and 111dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
The MAX1241CCSA+ features a low-pass-filter (LPF) that consists of an external transconductance amplifier (TCA), an external differential amplifier (external-DA) and a temperature-compensated PGA. The LPF circuitry filters out high frequencies from the input signal and reduces the effect of external noise. The TCA is configured from either 5kHz or 8kHz bandwidth and delivers a 146–156 dB/Hz 2nd-order intermediate frequency-weighted linearity and SNR. The ADC provides a wide signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from 111dB with an 8k-64k sample rate, and a low propagation delay of 1µs from signal input to data output. Its low-noise and low-distortion design makes it suitable for low-noise applications. The ADC also provides a digital temperature converter support for monitoring temperature range.
The MAX1241CCSA+ supports a wide range of software and hardware features, such as programmable gain capability, input buffer gain control, over-temperature alarm, overvoltage protection, adaptive hysteresis, and soft start. It also has a built-in timer that provides programmable output pulse widths, and a reset feature that helps protect against excessive power-up time.
