It is a highly integrated device that combines charge control and on-board power conversion, making it the ideal choice for powering small lithium-ion and nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries for automotive applications. The MAX14656EEWE+T offers a wide range of features, such as high efficiency, low output ripple, battery light load control, plus current and voltage monitoring. The device also features a soft-touch input interface and automatic wake-on-battery detection.The MAX14656EEWE+T combines a power converter, a logic controller and an analog-to-digital converter, which offers an increased system reliability. The device is optimized for use with a wide range of battery types, including nickel–metal hydride (NiMH), button cells, and lithium ion (Li-ion). It supports battery temperature monitoring, allowing the temperature to be detected through a thermistor or PTAT (positive temperature coefficient). This allows the device to adjust the charge current and voltage accordingly, protecting the battery cells from overcharging or excessive heat.The device operates in constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) mode, providing a high power conversion efficiency while minimizing the heat dissipation on the battery. The output voltage is adjustable up to 15V and the charge current can be set at any level between 0.5A and 2.5A. Once the battery is fully charged, the MAX14656EEWE+T automatically enters a trickle charging mode to maintain the battery at a full charge.The MAX14656EEWE+T includes an onboard ultra-low power supervisor which monitors the battery voltage and terminates the charge cycle when the battery is charged. The supervisor can be configured to terminate the charge cycle at any preset voltage level. The device also includes a programmable self-discharge timer, which allows the user to customize the battery discharge rate for better battery life.The MAX14656EEWE+T also offers a range of protection features, including Over-voltage, Over-temperature, Reverse Polarity, Over-current and Short Circuit protection, thus ensuring the safety of the device, battery and system.Overall, the MAX14656EEWE+T is a highly integrated and advanced power solution, which offers excellent performance, high levels of efficiency, and provides a wide range of features that make this device ideal for automotive applications.
