Digital Isolators are widely used in application fields across sectors such as computer technology, communication technology, automotive industry, aerospace, medical devices, industrial automation and more. The MAX14931CASE+T is an isolated transformer-coupled, gate-drive circuit for driving N-channel MOSFETs in high-voltage power applications that require isolation up to 2.5kV.

The MAX14931CASE+T features an integrated transformer-coupled isolation path comprised of two coupled inductors that can be configured in single-or dual-channel galvanic isolation, incorporated with an N-channel MOSFET switch to provide a wide range of isolation levels. It is designed to reduce EMI emission levels by providing electrical, magnetic, and thermal isolation between the two sides of the circuit.

The operating voltage of the device is from 0.7V to 6V, with a supply current of 1.1mA (max) and operating frequency range of up to 125 KHz. The output voltage is adjustable from -6V to 6V, and the typical output current is 2.5mA. An adjustable turn-on threshold for the output keeps leakage current to a minimum.

The MAX14931CASE+T offers a high level of galvanic isolation, making it suitable for applications that require two isolated power rails. It also offers an integrated C-channel MOSFET, reducing PCB space requirements and increasing reliability. The device provides low-side drive of two isolated outputs when combined with the MAX14930PX+ jumper SCR and PFET device.

The MAX14931CASE+T applications include low power offline isolated converters, dual-poled switching power supplies, point-of-load converters, isolated DC-DC converters, ac/dc wall adapters, battery-powered motors, high-power drives, and many more. In addition, the device includes a soft-start and optional active current limit which ensures a smooth start-up and over-temperature protection.

MAX14931CASE+T’s working principle is two N-channel MOSFETs are connected in series, with one of the inputs of each transistor connected to either of the two sides of the primary winding of the transformer. A power supply is connected to the other input of the transistors, through a resistor. An opto-coupler is placed across the secondary side of the transformer, which consists of a photo-diode and a phototransistor.The voltage or current on the primary side of the transformer is sensed by the photocoupler and the phototransistor which amplifies the voltage or current and generates a signal on the secondary side of the transformer. This signal is fed to the gate of the MOSFET on the secondary side of the transformer, inducing current flow from the power supply to the secondary winding. The induced current is then rectified and the resulting output voltage is regulated using the voltage feedback.

The MAX14931CASE+T offers exceptional performance in terms of high isolation, low standby current, low distortion, high power efficiency, and low EMI.
