The MAX15006BASA+ is a single-output, synchronous step-down switching regulator that combines a wide range of features into a compact, 8-pin SO package. With an ultra-low quiescent current of 45 μA, high efficiency, and optimal thermal performance, the MAX15006BASA+ is an excellent choice for low-power applications. The MAX15006BASA+ includes two integrated 1 mΩ, high-efficiency power MOSFETs and an output voltage range adjustable from 0.25 V to 9 V. It is designed to operate from an input voltage supply of 2.7 V to 17 V enabling operation from other sources such as a single Li-Ion cell or +5 V line supplied from a boost regulator.It features programmable over-temperature and over-current protection to protect the system in difficult operating conditions. The device also features soft-start and output tracking, as well as a selectable PFM/PWM pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode and a low-dropout (LDO) bypass mode, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. MAX15006BASA+ can be broadly divided into three application fields. The first application field encompasses low-power, battery-powered devices such as portable product like digital cameras, Bluetooth headsets, game consoles, displays for cellular phones and MP3 players. The second application is memory systems such as flash and DRAMs, particularly when operating from a wide input range. The last and third application field is that of processor core power supplies. The device provides a cost-effective solution to power embedded and wireless communication processors, where optimization of board space and low-power operation is essential. As such, it is particularly suitable for applications like navigation with GPS, 3G and 4G systems, 802.11WiFi, WiMAX, and industrial PCs.

Working principle of MAX15006BASA+

The device is based on synchronous buck topology and includes a two-phase pulsed-width modulation (PWM) current-mode controller and two integrated 1 mΩ, high-efficiency power MOSFETs. The device can deliver up to 2 A of continuous output current from an input voltage range of 2.7 V to 17 V. The device has an internal, programmable frequency ranging up to 1.4 MHz, and a Spread Spectrum feature that can be enabled resulting in average or maximum load current ripple reduction. The device also features a programmable, fast response over-temperature and over-current protection to protect the system in difficult operating conditions. In order to reduce output voltage transients, the device features a programmable soft-start with an adjustable Ramp slope, as well as programmable remote load sensing. The device also features an output tracking function that allows tracking of a 0.25 V to 5 V reference voltage. This feature is particularly useful in digital point-of-load applications.

The MAX15006BASA+ is also equipped with a low-dropout (LDO) bypass feature that allows the device to automatically switch from PWM mode to low-power LDO bypass mode. This feature is particularly useful in applications that require reduced power consumption for extremely small loads. In order to ensure optimal performance in all operating modes, the device is equipped with an integrated power-on reset, programmable fast response comparators, and an adjustable phase synchronization.
