MAX1761EEE application field and working principle

Introduction

MAX1761EEE is a low-cost, low-noise, single-output synchronous step-down switching controller from Maxim Integrated. Its features include an integrated 555-kHz oscillator and true ±99% duty cycle capability, allowing designers to reduce component count, power loss, and overall system cost. The MAX1761EEE limits external component count to only two 0.22μH to 3.3μH inductors, two 2.2μF to 10μF capacitors, one RC network, and one 0.3Ω to 2Ω power switch; no transformer or bias circuitry is needed.

Working Principle

The MAX1761EEE is a synchronous buck-converter controller, which integrates a pulse-width-modulation (PWM) generator, an over-current protective device, an under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) circuit and a driver in one package. The MAX1761EEE works by modulating the output voltage of an inductor-capacitor (LC) filter, which is connected to the input/output pins.The output voltage of the LC filter is controlled by the pulse-width modulation (PWM) generator in the MAX1761EEE. The PWM generator determines the duty cycle of the PWM output, and thus the output voltage. The duty cycle of the PWM generator is determined by the output voltage-setting pin (VSET) and the current limit pin (ILIM). The duty cycle of the PWM generator is also affected by the current sensing pin (ISNS), the output Voltage sense pin(VSNS), and the oscillator frequency. The MAX1761EEE also integrates an over-current protection circuit that detects the over-current condition and prevents the damage of the power switch or output devices. The over-current protection circuit shuts off the power switch when the current reaches a predetermined level. The under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) circuit in the MAX1761EEE will turn off the power switch when the input voltage drops below a certain threshold.
