The MAX1775EEE+ is a precision single-inductor boost converter that combines a low quiescent current, high efficiency, and low output ripple with a 44V input capability, wide 0.6V to 5.5V adjustable output voltage range, and 700kHz programmable switching frequency. The device provides superior performance compared with other single-inductor buck-boost converters while having a very small package of just 10 pin SOT-23-5. The MAX1775EEE+ is the ideal choice for small portable electronics applications operating off single-cell Li-ion and Li-polymer batteries.

The MAX1775EEE+ is an ideal choice for applications such as LED drivers, portable medical systems, cellular phones, PDAs and other portable electronic devices. The device features a power-good diagnostic, small 10-pin SOT-23-5 package, and requires a minimum of external components. Its light-load efficiency is increased even further by the external N-Channel MOSFET’s low on-state resistance (RDS(ON)) and low gate charge.

Application Field

The MAX1775EEE+ is mainly used for LED lighting applications, such as LED drivers, LED flashlights and LED backlighting. The current input from the battery to the LED is regulated and the voltage can be precisely adjusted within 0.6V to 5.5V range. It is also used in portable medical systems and cellular phones, as well as PDAs, digital cameras and other portable consumer electronics.

Working Principle

The MAX1775EEE+ combines switching and linear regulation in a single package, which results in high efficiency and low quiescent current. It uses a single inductor to step up the input voltage and provide the regulated output. It has a built-in voltage regulator of 0.6V to 5.5V adjustable output and 700kHz programmable switching frequency. It functions by organizing an external N-channel MOSFET from a high-side driver and features an internal linear PNP and N-channel MOSFETs for improved efficiency at light loads. An external current sense resistor is used to sense the peak inductor current.

There is also an external ON/OFF enable control function in the MAX1775EEE+. When the switch is enabled, the device controls the external N-channel MOSFET in a constant-on-time configuration. The switch goes on when the output voltage drops below the nominal setting, and turns off when the output voltage reaches a fixed upper threshold. This process continues until the current sense resistor senses a current leading to peak inductor current.

The device also contains an internal reference voltage regulator to ensure stable output voltage throughout the input voltage range. Furthermore, an under-voltage lockout feature proportionally reduces the switching frequency as the input supply voltage decreases, providing protection against input voltage dropouts and offering a longer run time on the battery.
