MAX1799EUP+ is a one-cell battery-level monitor designed for Li-ion or Li-polymer Li-ion applications. This pin-compatible easy-to-use device is ideal for any portable device requiring an accurate fuel gauge for a multi-cell battery pack. It features I2 C and SMBus-compatible interfaces and operates down to 1.5V, while providing low power consumption and accurate battery-level monitoring. MAX1799EUP+’s patented Cell-level (or die-level) monitoring, combining monitoring of cell voltage and temperature, offers advanced protection and improved accuracy. Because the voltage and temperature sensing elements are embedded in the chip’s core substrate, they respond faster to system conditions and provide real-time information. This Extremely Low Level Monitoring (ELLM) is advantageous in applications requiring low cell voltage protection.
The MAX1799EUP+ application field is vast, for instance portable personal electronics & digital devices, toys, digital cameras, notebook/tablet PCs, medical devices, navigation systems and many more. The device also helps protect batteries from overcharge, over-discharge, over-temperature and short-circuit conditions. The monitor is compliant with JEITA guideline and its current range is compitible with single-cell Li-ion batteries.
The MAX1799EUP+ IC operating principle is quite simple. It measures the cell voltage by sampling a resistive divider connected to the battery cell and programs an equivalent voltage on its SOC (State of Charge) output pin, in order to give the current SOC of the battery. The IC has a built-in analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to digitize the measured voltage and then performs a look-up table in its built-in memory to program the equivalent analog output voltage. The device computes SOC from the information it samples and then performs a supplemental look-up table computation to determine the equivalent output voltage for the next SOC step. Periodic temperature measurements are taken for temperature-dependent SOC outputs and the current of the device is then adjusted accordingly.
In order to increase accuracy and reduce power consumption, the device also implements an ELLM (Extremely Low Level Monitoring). This feature enables the device to compute the SOC of a cell in a very low state of charge (SOC) while maintaining a low power consumption by reducing the current. MAX1799EUP+ can operate as a battery gauge, providing an accurate SOC indication, while also providing a fuel gauge–like feature that allows the user to accurately estimate remaining operation time.
