Battery Charging Overview

A basic Li-Ion or Li-Poly battery charging circuit includes a protection circuit, a voltage regulator and a current limiting controller to ensure that the battery can be safely charged. The protection circuit prevents the battery from being overcharged, while the current limit controller keeps the charge current within a safe limit. The voltage regulator ensures that the voltage across the battery terminals remains between a certain preset range which is determined by the battery type.

MAX1811ESA Working Principle

This voltage regulation continues until the terminal voltage drops below 4.1 V or 2.9 V (whichever is higher). This indicates that the battery is fully charged and the MAX1811ESA will then switch to a trickle charge state, slowly reducing the amount of current flowing through the battery.

The MAX1811ESA also includes a temperature sensor to monitor the temperature of the battery. If the temperature exceeds a preset limit, the MAX1811ESA will reduce the current to a safe limit in order to prevent the battery from overheating.

When the MAX1811ESA detects that the battery is connected to a power source, it will automatically start charging the battery. This is done using an internal timer to ensure that the charger does not start prematurely or damage the battery due to prolonged charging. The charger will also shut off automatically when it detects that the battery has been fully charged.

The MAX1811ESA also includes several features to ensure the safety of the battery, such as overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, undervoltage protection, and reverse current blocking. These features help to protect the battery from being overcharged or damaged due to excessive current flow.
