MAX187CEWE+

The MAX187CEWE is a precision, low-power, high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) targeted for use in power-sensitive single-supply applications such as digital audio, disk drives, and medical instrumentation. It can convert single-ended 0-5V signals into 10-bit binary codes at sampling rates up to 5MSPS (mega-samples per second). This product also features a switched-capacitor/succonversion architecture that combines fast conversion speed with low power consumption, making it suitable for battery-powered applications.

The MAX187CEWE+ has a user-selectable input range of 0-2V, 0-5V, and -2V-3V while its output range is 0 to 1023. The MAX187CEWE+ includes selectable reference voltage, which can be adjusted to accurately measure input signals, and a single-ended/differential input mode, which allows the converter to simultaneously sample and digitize single-ended and differential signals. The MAX187CEWE+ also features an output latch and system reset that simplifies interface to dynamic memories.

The working principle of the MAX187CEWE+ is based on the switched-capacitor conversion architecture. This architecture reduces power consumption and provides a low-cost solution compared to other converter. The SAMPLE/HOLD capacitor is charged to the input signal voltage and then reconstructed using an internal reference voltage. Once discharged, the SAMPLE/HOLD capacitor is charged prior to the completion of the first cycle.

The converter reads this reference and input signal voltage during the second cycle. During the third cycle, the charge is switched back to the conversion capacitor and then amplified and sampled. After the completion of the third cycle, the resulting 10-bit digital code is available through the output pins.

The MAX187CEWE+ is designed to operate from a 1V supply with a resolution of 10-bits and a sampling rate of up to 5MSPS. Its power consumption is in the range of 33mW (typ) and 40mW (max). The MAX187CEWE+ offers fast, low-power conversion and a high resolution resulting in precise measurement of analog signals.
