Data Acquisition – ADCs/DACs – Special Purpose
The MAX188CEAP is a specialized application field differential input ADC with features enabling high resolution, fast conversion and flexibility. The part has been designed to fit a wide range of applications such as audio, amplitude and frequency detection, battery monitoring and so on. These n- and p-channel devices are simply configured and easily integrated in system designs. In addition to offering excellent linearity, the device offers differential inputs and dual output MAXDAC®, making it ideal for a variety of control, sensing and data acquisition applications.

The MAX188CEAP, supports a single-supply operating voltage ranging from 3.0 to 5.0V and supports sampling rates up to 333 ksps. It has a Charge Cancellation™ capability that eliminates the need for extra settling time, enabling immediate readback after sampling. The slew rate of the part is 5 mV/μs and its noise is 35 nV √Hz. The part is also equipped with a 0.6 μA power down mode, to lower power consumption in between data acquisition cycles.

Working Principle
The MAX188CEAP is a precision differential and single-ended analog-to-digital conversion device. It contains two 8-bit buffers and two 8-bit SARs and a serial interface. The two SARs convert unipolar or bipolar signals into a digital 8-bit parallel output. The buffers and SARs operate a successive approximation conversion method and are designed to minimize the effect of noise in the signal and provide good linearity. The device is aided by a ChargeCancellation™ technique that uses digital charge steering to cancel differential input errors, allowing shorter settling times.

The part comes with three built-in reference levels that can be used to set the resolution. These reference levels include the full scale level, the mid-level, and the offset level. The full scale level sets the upper limit of the conversion range and the mid-level sets the middle point of the conversion range. The offset level sets the lower limit of the conversion range. The reference levels also provide a means for offset compensation, which allows for better linearity over the entire conversion range.

The MAX188CEAP also features a double-buffered dual-channel serial interface. This interface allows for two channels of conversion to be performed sequentially on the same ADC. This feature of the part allows for higher conversion rates and improved resolution performance.

The device also includes a high-speed counter/timer. This timer can count up to 2,000 clock cycles and is used as a high-speed clock source for both conversion channels. The MAX188CEAP contains one eight-bit DAC (Digital-to-analog converter) per channel. The DACs are designed to be used in a variety of control and potentiometric systems. The DAC output can be used as a reference voltage for the ADC, and is also available as an input to the ADC for offset correction. The DAC can also be used for gain control of the ADC, and for calibration of any system gain errors.
