Working principle
The MAX196AEWI+ features innovative zero-drift architecture, low-voltage biphase conversion, and an on-chip reference cell to provide exceptional accuracy for its 16-bit A/D converter. It also offers high-performance monitoring, wide-range data acquisition, and flexible I/O options.
The device uses dual-slope conversion technique. During measurements, the input voltage is sampled twice: the first sample (V1) is formed when the integration capacitor is charged from 0V to VIN; then, the integration capacitor is discharged from VIN to 0V and the second sample (V2) is taken. The device is capable of measuring values up to 20.5V (GND – 0.5V) with a 16-bit accuracy.
The on-chip zero-drift A/D converter isolates the low-voltage internal reference from the input and uses a single, low-voltage charge pump to generate the internal voltage references. When monitoring, the device continuously compensates for the temperature and the supply voltage drifts thanks to the built-in zero-drift circuitry.
The device is also flexible in its I/O options. It offers an open-drain CMOS logic interface that is compatible with standard logic families and allows direct connection to a microcontroller, as well as a single-ended signal port designed to operate at 1.8V. Additionally, it supports a wide range of power supplies, from 1.8V to 5V and allows two adjustment ranges for the input voltage range.
