The MAX196BCAI+ is a part of Texas Instruments’ portfolio of data acquisition components. It is an Asynchronous Sample Rate Converter (ASRC), which serves as a bridge between two different clock domains. The MAX196BCAI+ helps facilitate the conversion of input data rates to arbitrarily selected output rates and offers jitter or cycle-slip free operation.

The MAX196BCAI+ performs the conversion of input data formats to equivalent parallel output data formats in real-time. The input and output data formats cover the commonly used 16 and 24-bit wide audio word lengths, as well as common sampling rates of 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, and 88.2 kHz. At a signal level, the MAX196BCAI+ accepts an I2S compatible input signal, a serial SPDIF input signal, or a 16-bit, right-justified, stereo input signal. The MAX196BCAI+ has the ability to convert a 16-bit or 24-bit I2S input signal to 16-bit, 20-bit, or 24-bit left-justified output signal. Additionally, it can also convert a serial SPDIF input signal to a 16-bit, 20-bit, or 24-bit left-justified output signal. The MAX196BCAI+ contains serial port enable, master-slave communication interface, and miscellaneous audio support features.

At the core of the MAX196BCAI+ is a Flexible Parser which is responsible for conveying the input data stream and formatting to meet the formatting requirements of the output clock. The incoming data is parsed into 16-bit words, each with two accompanying parity bits, thus providing 16-bit resolution. The MAX196BCAI+ transmits a clock signal to the FIFO memory, which is loaded with the 16-bit words. The FIFO memory can handle data transfer rates between 3MHz and 200MHz, with no difference in the data rate cycle accuracy.

The MAX196BCAI+ has the ability to adjust the output data rate automatically based on the incoming source data rate. It also compensates for short-term fluctuations in source bit clock rate, so that high-performance audio can be maintained even in the presence of varying clock phase. This feature also reduces the setup time for sample rate conversion, since the output clock rate does not need to be programmed and adjusted dynamically. The MAX196BCAI+ offers a number of optional features such as automatic jitter attenuation and manual control of the sample rate and clock frequency.
