The MAX3162EEAI+ operates in three core modes: transmit, receive, and low-power shutdown. In transmit mode, it converts asynchronous RS-232 logic levels as low as +3V or as high as +15V to a consistent logic level of 0.5V to 3.3V. Asynchronous logic levels are accurately reproduced on the output, while transmitting with a slew rate of 30V/µs. The signal attenuation is optimized, so it can both meet and exceed recommended signal quality standards.

In receive mode, the MAX3162EEAI+ converts RS-232 levels in the range of 0.5V-3.3V to the logic levels specified in the RS-232 standard (e.g. +3V to +15V). The MAX3162EEAI+ also provides logic-level translation to ensure its output signals can be correctly interpreted when received from logic levels that are on the limits of the selected logic standard.

The MAX3162EEAI+ offers low power shutdown mode which automatically transitions between active and shutdown mode to minimize power consumption. In this state, the IC will turn off all internal circuitry and reduce power consumption to less than 1.5 µA. Max power consumption is 300 µA in active mode.
