MAX3185CAP an SPI-compatible, multi-gigabit transceiver is a power-efficient, electrostatic discharge (ESD) protected, 3.3 V CMOS device that can operate from 2.7V to 3.6V. It integrates a multichannel serial peripheral interface (SPI) into a small form factor and is configured to be a master or slave. The MAX3185CAP is low-power, and has very low input and output skew to minimize jitter on the output data. The device is particularly suited for applications that require a versatile, low-cost, and low-power solution.

The interface consists of serial clock (SCLK) line, a serial data In (SDI) line, serial data Out (SDO) line, chip select signal (CS#) lines and an interrupt signal (INT#). The SCLK and data lines are driven by the master device and the chip select signal is used for selecting the device to be active in the line. The MAX3185CAP has two chip select lines to facilitate the connection of two or more devices to the same bus.

In data transmission, the master device sends the start bit and clock signal to the MAX3185CAP to initiate the transmission. This clock signal is used to synchronize the data transfer and drive the data lines. After the start bit, the data bits will be transmitted in a serial format and the order is specified by the master device. Depending upon the frame sync type, it is either MSB or LSB first. After the data bits are sent, the end bit is transmitted and once it is received, the master device deactivates the CS# signal, signalling the end of transaction. The device then sends an acknowledgement to the master device.

In this mode, the device uses the auto-negotiation protocol, where both the master and the device performs auto-negotiation for network link establishment.
