Introduction
The MAX3222ECPN+ is a low-power, low-voltage, full-duplex RS-232 transceiver for use in data communications between either a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) or Data Communication Equipment (DCE) and a data communication line as specified in the EIA/TIA-232-F standard. It is a few millivolts above ground that saturates the output transistor, allowing the device to operate over a wide range of capacitive loads and maintain full RS-232 waveform performance in the process. The device typically is placed in-line between a conventional (DTE) and Data Communication Equipment (DCE) and it operates as an interface to transmit and receive data in the RS-232 protocol.

The MAX3222ECPN+ is an EIA/TIA-232-F compatible transceiver/driver. It is designed primarily to transmit/receive NRZ/UART data from a data source to/from a peripheral device. The MAX3222ECPN+ includes both receiver and transmitter outputs on the same chip (integrated-receiver, transmitter (IRT) solution). Also, since the two transmitter outputs are always "180o out of phase" with each other, this also reduces ringing on the output signals.
The MAX3222ECPN+ features a low power dissipation mode with capability to automatically enter the active or standby mode, so no external control or logic support is required for power management. By entering the active or standby mode, the MAX3222ECPN+ can reduce the power dissipation by more than 90%. The device has programmable slew rate on inputs and outputs to control the rise and fall times of the waveform, or to reduce the spectral content of the transmitted waveform.
The device supports 5V logic levels and is designed to perform best in low-voltage communication environments (1.8V to 5V). Its output levels are designed to provide full 2Vpp into an open circuit, while allowing the output voltage to drop as low as 0.8V under high capacitive loads, such as those encountered in compliance testing. This permits the device to maintain adequate link margin in the presence of excessive transmission line loading.
