The MAX3223EEPP+ is a Transceivers IC designed to provide a simple, low-cost solution to interface RS-232 to low-voltage (3V to 5.5V) logic, vise versa. This application provides increased noise immunity for applications, such as point-of-sale terminals, computer peripherals and battery-powered systems with an Ultralow Shutdown current, typically less than 1μA.
The MAX3223EEPP+ is an industrial grade SMBus-target, I²C compatible Transceivers with hot-swapping, ESD protection and a wide operating temperature range. It is an excellent choice for applications requiring robust operation in environments prone to ESD. It is also an ideal solution when an extra level of noise and ESD protection is necessary.

Working Principle
The MAX3223EEPP+ is a bi-directional Transceivers which means it can be used for both data flow directions. With the aid of internal pull-up resistors, the MAX3223EEPP+ provides bi-directional data flow over the interface. The MAX3223EEPP+ is capable of transferring data at a rate of up to 250 Kbps.
The Transceivers provides an industry-standard ESD interface, which is necessary for hot-swapping, ESD and noise protection. The ESD interface is comprised of two different components, a drain and source devices. When a voltage differential is applied to the ESD device, the voltage between the drain and source has to be greater than a certain threshold. Once this threshold has been reached, ESD protection is activated and the ESD protection voltage will be applied to the input pins of the MAX3223EEPP+.
The MAX3223EEPP+ also has power saving features including an Ultralow Shutdown current. The Shutdown current is typically less than 1μA, making the MAX3223EEPP+ ideal for battery-powered applications. Additionally, the MAX3223EEPP+ has an adjustable bias current, allowing for precise control over the power consumption of the MAX3223EEPP+.
The MAX3223EEPP+ provides an excellent solution for customers who require a robust and reliable communication interface between RS-232 devices and low-voltage (3V to 5.5V) logic devices.
