Working Principles of the MAX3227EAE+
The MAX3227EAE+ consists of four main components: a differential driver, a differential receiver, a low-power receiver disable switch, and an enable flag. Three pins, OEn, XRA and XRB, control the driver to enable half-duplex or full-duplex operation. When OEn is LOW, the driver is enabled and XRA and XRB are used to select full-duplex (XRA=HIGH and XRB=LOW) or half-duplex (XRA=HIGH and XRB=HIGH). When OEn is HIGH, the driver is disabled, the enable flag is asserted, and the receiver automatically dominates the connected bus. The differential input of the driver must be valid when OEn is LOW. The MAX3227EAE+ can also be disabled automatically if the differential input of the driver is transmitted continuously for a period longer than the specified time.
The differential receiver within the MAX3227EAE+ contains hysteresis, which allows it to detect RS-485/RS-422 signals at differential input levels as low as 50 mV. This hysteresis prevents false triggering from short, high-frequency voltage spikes or inverted communication signals. It also has an ESD-protected data output, which provides logic signals compatible with TTL and CMOS logic families, and permits direct connection to microcontrollers and other logic circuits.
To protect against damage due to high-powered electromagnetic fields, the MAX3227EAE+ is also designed with features that minimize EMI. These features include a driver output enable function, very low quiescent current, a Push-Pull low-power driver output with slew-rate limiting, and a differential receiver with an adaptive common-mode range.
