Working Principle
The MAX3245CAI+ is a dynamic bi-directional I/O port expander that can expand up to 8 ports. This device has a dynamic control logic built in and allows the host to set up the direction and logic of a port in order to ensure compatibility with all standard logic families, such as CMOS and TTL logic. The dynamic I/O signals of MAX3245CAI+ are supplied to up to 8 ports. This device supports five operating modes, allowing the port direction and logic to be configured according to the specific application. The five operating modes are the bi-directional output mode, bi-directional input/output mode, uni-directional output mode, tri-state output mode and CMOS output mode.In the bi-directional output mode, the port direction is controlled by the inverted status of the direction output pin (DIR) and can be programmed to either input or output. When the DIR pin is low, the port is configured as an output. When the DIR pin is high, the port is configured as an input. The logic of the port can be configured in the bi-directional output mode by the logic output pin (LOG). When the LOG pin is low, the port is configured to provide a high output. When the LOG pin is high, the port is configured to supply a low output. In the bi-directional input/output mode, the port direction is set to input by the inverted status of the direction output pin (DIR). When the DIR pin is high, the port is configured as an input. The logic of the port can be configured in the bi-directional input/output mode by the logic output pin (LOG). When the LOG pin is low, the port is configured to expect a logical high input. When the LOG pin is high, the port is configured to expect a logical low input. In the uni-directional output mode, the port direction is not set by the direction output pin (DIR) and remains in an output state regardless of its status. In this mode, the logic of the port can be configured by the logic output pin (LOG). When the LOG pin is low, the port is configured to provide a high output. When the LOG pin is high, the port is configured to supply a low output.In the tri-state output mode, the port direction is set to input by the inverted status of the direction output pin (DIR). When the DIR pin is high, the port is configured as an input. In this mode, the logic of the port can be configured by the logic output pin (LOG). When the LOG pin is low, the port is tri-stated and allows the host to monitor the input. When the LOG pin is high, the port is configured to supply a low output. In the CMOS output mode, the port direction is not set by the direction output pin (DIR) and remains in an output state regardless of its status. In this mode, the logic of the port can be changed between a logic low and a logic high by the logic output pin (LOG). When the LOG pin is low, the port is configured to provide a low output.
