The MAX3245CWI+ integrated circuit is a Differential Bus transceiver with integrated protection diode networks. Designed to offer a high degree of robustness, it is a reliable component for different application fields. Particularly, it is suitable for bidirectional synchronous signaling over balanced transmission lines, such as RS-422, RS-485 and SDLC, which are widely used for short-range data communication protocols.

Overview

The MAX3245CWI+ is a low-voltage transceiver designed to be used as an interface between two buses, such as a differential data bus and a unidirectional one. It is a single-chip device that can be used to interface with 3- 5V logic families. It contains two signals: one is EIA/TIA-485 differential transmitter and the other is EIA/TIA-485 differential receiver. The integrated Protection Diode Network allows bidirectional communication with full EIA/TIA-485 compliance over a single pair of conductors. The MAX3245CWI+ requires a single 3-5V supply, bidirectional switching of the Tx and Rx signals, as well as a wide common-mode voltage range from ±15V.

Working principle

The MAX3245CWI+ transceiver consists of two differential inputs and two differential outputs that are linked together by bidirectional switches. The two differential receivers are connected to two independent input pins, while two differential transmitters are connected to two independent output pins. The bidirectional switches allow the driver to act either as a transmitter or as a receiver, depending on the logic level present on the enable/control pin.

The EIA/TIA-485 compliance of the MAX3245CWI+ provides for robustness and reliability on the system. The integrated protection diode network helps to reduce the voltage differences across the diode network, thus limiting the amount of current that flows from one side of the receiver to the other. This ensures that the transceiver can handle high spikes and noise of up to ±25V with little to no disruption in performance.

The MAX3245CWI+ integrated circuit features a low power consumption: the standby current is only 18µA and the maximum operating current is 8mA. The switching speed is 10 Mbps and the rise/fall times are 6 ns/6 ns. The receiver input resistance is typically 33kΩ, while the transmitter source impedance is less than 100Ω, enabling it to faithfully transmit signals over long lines. Furthermore, this integrated circuit features adjustable outputs between 5V and 3V, and the operating temperature range is -40°C to +125°C.
