MAX3291ESD Application Field and Working Principle

The MAX3291ESD is a low-power, 4-channel I²CBus buffer chip manufactured by Maxim Integrated. It provides a level of protection for an I2Cbus by converting a possible 5V signal to 3.3V. By isolating the two systems, the MAX3291ESD also helps protect the systems from noise. This buffer chip helps provide bidirectional level shifting between I2Cbus systems with different logic voltages.

The MAX3291ESD accepts 4-channel, bidirectional level shifting between two separate I2Cbus systems. These systems can operate at a different voltage range, such as 5V and 3.3V. The MAX3291ESD supports both master and slave operation, each operating at up to 1MHz data rate. The device supports up to 2kV of ESD on its bus pins.

The MAX3291ESD has a 3.3V supply voltage and a 0.9V to 1.2V signal voltage. The signal voltage levels can be adjusted using the MAX3291ESD\'s on-board signal level adjust register. The MAX3291ESD\'s signal level adjust register provides a low-power, programmable reference voltage to the signal pins. The signal level adjust register can be programmed with external logic level. The signal level adjust register can be programmed from 0V to 3.25V, allowing the signal voltage level to be adjustable to match the voltage levels of the two I2Cbus systems.

The MAX3291ESD has a total of twelve pins, comprising of two I2Cbus pins (SDA and SCL), 4 data lines (4 channels), two power pins (VCC and GND), two ESD protection pins (ESD1 and ESD2), a power-on reset pin (POR), a signal level adjust register (SLAR) pin and a logic reset pin (LOGIC RESET). The SDA and SCL pins support both 3.3V and 5V I2Cbus systems. The data lines allow four parallel channels of bidirectional level shifting between the two I2Cbus systems. The power pins provide power to the device. The ESD1 and ESD2 pins are used for ESD protection and the POR pin is used for power-on reset. The SLAR pin is used to program the signal level adjust register. The LOGIC RESET pin resets the device.

The MAX3291ESD has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is available in an SOIC-8 package. It is designed to provide low-power level shifting and line protection for I2Cbus systems. Its bidirectional level shifting capability eliminates the need of additional components and helps reduce cost and board space.
