The MAX3380ECUP is an ultra-low power, low voltage, multi-purpose transceiver ideal for small portable devices and low-power applications. It is designed to support UART signaling, enabling a single-chip solution for data rate conversions. It supports 5V, 3.3V and 1.8V logic levels, auto data rate detection and auto detect of either UART or IrDA modes. In addition, the MAX3380ECUP has an integrated power-saving function that can be enabled to reduce power consumption when idle.

As an interface-driver, the MAX3380ECUP can be used to drive the interface IOs of a peripheral device to transmit and receive data directly from a host processor. The MAX3380ECUP Core is a configurable logic design that contains high-performance logic-optimized for driving single UARTs and multi-mode IrDA protocol stacks. It can be configured to support various I/O protocols including RS-232, RS-485, IR, 802.11a/b/g, USB, or LVDS.

The MAX3380ECUP supports both half-duplex and full-duplex communication. In half-duplex mode, it provides parallel UART interfaces using two separate pins for transmitting and receiving data respectively. In full-duplex mode, it provides one transmit and one receive line, thereby allowing two-way communication between the host microcontroller and peripheral device.

The MAX3380ECUP also includes a receiver and driver. The receiver converts analog signals into digital data and sends them to the microcontroller via a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). It supports detect levels up to -90dBm and uses Peak to Peak detection to detect and quantify the signal strength. The driver will then receive the digital data from the microcontroller and convert it into the output signal required by the peripheral device.

The MAX3380ECUP also has a transceiver function that is configurable for either half-duplex or full-duplex communication. The transceiver is designed to modulate, receive and transmit data between two transceivers using either UART or IrDA protocols. In addition, the transceiver supports auto rate detection and auto detect of either UART or IrDA mode.
