The MAX3668EHJ is an integrated power management IC (PMIC) designed to serve as a Field Programmable Driver (FPD) for laser diode flexi-drivers. It is an efficient laser diode driver that operates between 0 and 100V, with an input voltage range of 0.1 and 0.35V. It uses the latest in field effect transistor (FET) technology to achieve high-efficiency, low quiescent current and low noise operation.

The device provides constant-current or constant-power/constant-voltage operation for driving laser diodes. Its output current range is 0.5mA to 10mA with a current accuracy of ±5%. Furthermore, it offers over-current protection, a ramp rate control for controlling laser power, and highly accurate temperature coefficient. The MAX3668EHJ operates from a 12V input voltage, and provides a 3.3v logic-level supply for logic sequencing.

The MAX3668EHJ contains two FETs in a single package, enabling a complete power control solution in one package. An isolated logic control provides switchable high-side and low-side outputs, with a PA-to-SA diode protection circuit providing reverse polarity operation protection.

The on-chip high-speed PWM control circuit integrates current sense circuitry, allowing the device to handle high peak currents and peak-to-average current ratios with ease. This design further minimizes the total harmonic distortion (THD) and switching noise generated by the device, ensuring excellent efficiency. Moreover, the device provides high accuracy and a low quiescent current suitable for low power designs.

A comprehensive high-side/low-side diagnostic system is implemented to monitor output current, and to provide undercurrent, over-current, overtemperature and overvoltage alarms which can all be used to prevent system faults. The MAX3668EHJ features flexible digital control and support for both synchronous and asynchronous switching. Its built-in run-time compensation circuits further minimize switching losses.
