TVS - Mixed Technology

MAX367CWN+T is a type of Mixed Technology transient voltage suppressor (TVS) designed for high-voltage clamping applications. It consists of a Zener diode plus a succession of NPN diodes connected in series to form a directional “clamp”. This TVS is designed as a low-cost solution and provides an equivalent voltage clamping solution to that of an active crowbar.

Application Fields

MAX367CWN+T is particularly well suited for protecting circuitry from overvoltage events such as the accidental application of a higher voltage than normal, or induced surges from vehicles, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and lightening. It is a 3 line protection device which provides ESD, surge and voltage clamping for line to ground and line to line applications.

Working Principle

In normal operation, the Zener diode clamps the signal to a safe voltage level until the limit of the Zener diode is reached. If the input voltage continues to rise, the NPN diodes will begin to conduct and allow the current to flow from line to ground or line to line. The current clamping prevents the input voltage from rising further and thus prevents further damage to the device.

When this device is inserted into a circuit, the circuit typically functions normally until it is subjected to a high voltage. The device then clamps the voltage to a safe level, protecting the circuit from further damage. Once the overvoltage event passes, the NPN diodes turn off and the Zener diode returns the circuit to normal operation.
