The MAX3693ECJ+ is a fully integrated low cost, non-return to zero (NRZ) line interface circuit (LIC) featuring a serializer, deserializer, and clock data recovery (CDR). As a compact single chip solution, the MAX3693ECJ+ provides a flexible, easy to use digital interface providing a smooth transition from serial to parallel data. The MAX3693ECJ+ is ideal for use in high speed serial applications such as digital video over coax, fiber, and twisted-pair lines.

In terms of applications, the MAX3693ECJ+ is especially suitable for designs requiring transfer of data from the parallel world to the serial world and vice versa. It can be used for synchronous communication between FPGAs, ASICs, or CPUs. Additionally, it can be used for clock and data recovery from asynchronous serial signals in systems employing multiple sensors and actuators.

It functions by converting parallel data into single-bit serial streams and vice versa. The parallel-to-serial conversion is performed in the serializer, while the opposite process is done by the deserializer. The clock data recovery (CDR) function of the MAX3693ECJ+ monitors the transmitted data for clock and data dependencies and performs jitter attenuation.

The serializer accepts parallel data and drives a single-bit serial output stream for transmission through coax, fiber, or twinax cables. The serializer also absorbs jitter from the incoming reference clock and performs data scrambling, which minimizes the possibility of ISI and reduces data jitter. The incoming parallel data is stored in a 32-party FIFO buffer, whose output is synchronized to the clock rate.

On the opposite end, the deserializer reconstructs the parallel data, extracting the received serial data stream and converting it back to parallel format. The deserializer also features automatic clock sources detection, which enables it to discriminate between different clock sources regardless of the transmitted data pattern. In addition, the MAX3693ECJ+ includes a clock multiplication and jitter attenuator, which enables the deserializer to recover the clock from the transmitted data with low jitter.

Overall, the MAX3693ECJ+ offers an integrated, low-cost, high-speed serializer, deserializer and clock data recovery solution, capable of handling data rates up to 3.125 Gb/s with deterministic latency times.
