MAX3840ETJ+ is a high-efficiency single-channel redriver dedicated to improving signal integrity and link performance for DisplayPort and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 applications. It incorporates Equalization together with Cable de-skew and re-skewing to reset USB channel bit-error rate (BER) back to 10-12 or better, significantly enhancing system link performance. The MAX3840ETJ+ is typically used to replace the analog equalizer and re-timer at the receiver end of the cable.The typical application field involves two main fields; the first being USB applications and the second, DisplayPort applications. In the USB field, the application of MAX3840ETJ+ covers almost any device with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, allowing it to reap the benefits of improved signal integrity, reduced BERs and increased data transfer rates; low-speed and high-speed applications have both been noted to benefit from this device. The second Application field involves DisplayPort enabled applications, where the MAX3840ETJ+ significantly improves upon link performance and allows for longer cable runs (up to 10m) and larger resolutions to be achieved.The MAX3840ETJ+ consists of an Equalizer and Re-timer, enabling it to perform both Clock Recovery and Re-timing, but also offers the ability for Cable De-Skew/Re-Skewing.The Equalizer is a wide band programmable equalizer, optimized for USB 3.0, allowing it to increase link performance, even if signals are degraded due to the long traces on the PCBs. The MAX3840ETJ+ also has a programmable de-skew circuit that reads the signals sent to it and adjusts the skew to improve the timing of the signal.The Re-timer circuit then uses the programmable de-skew and equalization to drive an internal FF, generating a continual clock that is used to resend the signal back out via a selectable output. This clock is accurately recovered from the signal so as to perfectly restore the data by correcting zero/one mis-matches, inserting new zero elements and removing inappropriate transitions. This, in combination with the equalizer, creates a signal with a much improved BER, reducing the signal\'s jitter.The MAX3840ETJ+ offers flexibility in the signal process by providing low, medium and high settings for cable de-skew, equalization and re-timing. In addition, the re-timer output can be configured in various configurations depending on the application. The re-timed signal is provided on both outputs as a single-ended signal. Lastly, the MAX3840ETJ+ offers protection from Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) pollution via an Advanced ESD protection circuit.The MAX3840ETJ+ is powered using the USB3.0 or DisplayPort supply voltage and is optimized for use in 0.8V low-power applications.The main advantage of using the MAX3840ETJ+ is that it can improve signal integrity by increasing link performance, reduce BERs and increase data transfer rates. The device is also capable of long-term operation, with no degradation over time. The de-skew and re-skewing of signals increases the timing accuracy of the data, ensuring optimum performance of the link.
