Analog switches, multiplexers, and demultiplexers are crucial components in modern electronic systems. Used in a variety of applications, they allow the user to switch, multiplex, and demultiplex signals within an electronic circuit. The MAX396EPI+ is an advanced analog switch, multiplexer, and demultiplexer device manufactured by Maxim Integrated. It offers excellent performance with maximum operating power-supply currents of 2mA and a wide supply voltage range of ±40V. This device combines a single SPDT switch with a dual 4:1 mux/demux into a 16-pin DIP (Dual Inline Package).
The MAX396EPI+ features a 30dB maximum stopband attenuation at 1MHz, as well as extended frequency response with a maximum +2.2dB passband gain at 1MHz. It also includes fast switching times of 1ns to 0.8V and 4ns to 4V. With its low on-resistance of only 7.5Ω, the MAX396EPI+ is optimized for applications requiring low mistune and crosstalk. Finally, the device features a parallel enable and disable input, allowing the user to control the device’s active status.
The MAX396EPI+ offers a wide range of applications. It can be used as a communication interface, analog-to-digital converter (ADC), digital-to-analog converter (DAC), radio tuned amplifier switch, or as a general-purpose analog switch or multiplexer/demultiplexer. The device is also suitable for operation in high-accuracy, low-noise measurement and control systems, isolation amplifier designs, low-frequency filtering applications, data acquisition systems, and computer input/output systems.
The MAX396EPI+ is configured in an 6X4/10/14 mux/demux configuration, meaning that it contains two quad switch arrays and one dual switch array. The two quad switch arrays are designated M1 and M2, and the dual switch array is designated M3. Each array is connected to a common input node and four separate output nodes. The input and output nodes of M1 and M2 are connected together to form an 8-channel mux/demux circuit. M3 provides an additional two channels.
The MAX396EPI+ has six control inputs, one for each switch array. These control inputs are designated CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5, and CS6. CS1 and CS2 control the state of M1 and M2, respectively. CS3-CS6 control the state of M3. On the chip, these control inputs provide voltage levels of 0-VCC and 1-VCC. When a control input is 0-VCC, the associated switch is closed, thus allowing signal from the common input node to be passed through to the respective output. When a control input is 1-VCC, the associated switch is open, thereby inhibiting passage of the signal through the switch.
The MAX396EPI+ is ideal for signal switching and signal routing applications, offering excellent performance and low power consumption. It is manufactured using advanced CMOS process technologies, making it well suited for high volume, low cost production. The MAX396EPI+ is available in a standard 8-pin dual-in-line package, and is supported by a complete set of driver and application software, as well as low-cost development kits.
