The MAX8860EUA18+T is a high-performance, low-input voltage linear regulator designed to meet the performance and power requirements of high-end processor, memory, and graphics systems. The regulator is typically used to supply main system voltages up to 3.3 V at power levels of up to 20 A. The regulator supports input voltages of up to 20 V and achieves a dropout voltage of typically 1.3 V at full load. A precision output voltage of accurate to 0.5% is set with a single resistor and is adjustable. The device includes a SOFTSTART™ feature to limit inrush current during start-up.

The MAX8860EUA18+T applications include supplying core processor voltages, I/O translator and logic, as well as powering memory, graphics and other stationary applications. The regulator also allows for automated power sequencing of multiple rails, providing power reset sequencing and individual voltage sequencing capabilities. With its low dropout voltage of typically 1.3 V, the MAX8860EUA18+T is well suited for powering heavier loads.

The MAX8860EUA18+T utilizes a P-channel MOSFET design to achieve high load current capability and ultra low dropout voltage. The device regulates the output voltage by linearly varying the gate voltage of the power MOSFET in response to load current changes. This results in a constant output voltage as load current varies. Additionally, the input supply is monitored to ensure the output voltage does not deviate from its set point if the input voltage drops below the regulated output voltage.

The MAX8860EUA18+T uses a precision reference voltage to accurately set the output voltage. The output voltage is set with a single resistor and is adjustable over a wide range. Further, the device has a 63 mV (typical) dropout voltage and a current limit of 27 A (typical). This high maximum current capability allows for applications with heavy transient load currents and eliminates the need for external components such as decoupling capacitors.

The MAX8860EUA18+T is designed with a SOFTSTART™ feature to reduce inrush current during start-up and minimize low line dropout levels. The feature reduces overshoot and improves stability when the line-dropout is active. The regulator also includes a high-side vFAULT pin for active system power management and a MICROSENSE™ feature for improved current-sensing accuracy.

The MAX8860EUA18+T is available in an 8-pin TDFN package and is rated for operation over an extended temperature range (-40°C to +105°C). The device is also qualified for automotive use and is fully specified and characterized for use in mobile applications. The MAX8860EUA18+T is RoHS compliant and offers maximum power density and high efficiency.
