The MAX8878EZK33+T is a low dropout two-phase high output voltage linear regulator with adjustable output voltage, featuring low current and heat dissipation. It can be used for DC-DC step-down converter as well as synchronous step-down controller. The MAX8878EZK33+T can output a regulated voltage from 0.15V to 5V, and is designed to meet the requirements of the power management of desktop, server, laptop and tablet PC mobile peripherals. The MAX8878EZK33+T is optimized for microcontrollers and voltage sensitive devices, where the on-chip regulator enables seamless low-capacity power cooperation between the device and the host, increasing system efficiency. Due to its low noise and low dropout, the MAX8878EZK33+T is also suitable for use in audio systems, power supplies, strategic lighting, and low power production.
The MAX8878EZK33+T integrates two high frequency, low quiescent current linear regulators into one chip. Each of the two regulators has an enable pin, allowing the two regulators to work simultaneously or separately. By combining two regulators in one chip, the MAX8878EZK33+T can increase the voltage level in both output configurations, reducing the current consumption of the regulator and the power dissipation. Furthermore, the on-chip hybrid capacitor can be used to reduce the high frequency ripple on the output. This eliminates the need for additional low equivalent series inductance (ESL) bypass capacitors at the output, further simplifying the system.
The internal operating mode of the MAX8878EZK33+T is a two-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) system. The current for the two outputs is regulated separately. The output voltage is controlled through a one-shot current limiter and a one-shot PWM system. The PWM system is implemented with a 3 MHz switching frequency, which allows for the use of small output capacitors and density. An internal one-shot system is used to provide soft-start, minimizing output voltage overshoot. A thermal shut-down feature is included to protect the regulator from overtemperature conditions.
The MAX8878EZK33+T also provides remote programming as well as other features including output current limiting, SoftStart, output voltage monitor, adjustable over-voltage protection, and reverse current protection. It also contains a variety of external components including a voltage divider, an external current sense resistor, a power test resistor, and a soft-start capacitor. In addition, it uses a 6-bit, low-power serial peripheral interface (SPI) interface to provide a serial control interface.
