The MAX8903BETI+ is an efficient, low-cost, high-input voltage, low-power linear charger integrated circuit designed to fast-charge single-battery portable applications such as cell phones, digital still cameras, and portable media players (PMP). It is designed to charge a typical Li-Ion/Li-polymer cell at a constant current of up to 1A, and at a floating voltage up to 4.2V, by regulating the current and/or voltage to ±5%. It integrates a current source, a voltage source, an adjustable discharge switch, a battery temperature monitor, and a full-featured USB charger.
The MAX8903BETI+ electrostatic-discharge (ESD) protection features include an inherent ESD diode and the flexibility to customize the external cell-side protection circuitry. It has built-in safety features such as overcharging and overdischarging protection, programmable time limits for trickle-charge, preconditioning, charge, and top-off stages, as well as a low-battery indication feature. The charger IC also caters to High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) and Digital Transmitter Compliance (DTCP) regulations that require authentication, encryption, and secure communication links between host and device. The IC is housed in a small, 44-pin, 6 mm x 6 mm, 0.5 mm lead pitch, Quad Flat No-Lead (QFN) package.
Operating Principle
The MAX8903BETI+ operates on a linear charging principle. When the external power supply is connected to the charging pins, the IC constantly monitors the cell voltage and current. The current is regulated within ±5%. If the voltage exceeds 4.2V or the current is greater than 1A, the IC switches off the transistor and shuts down the charging process. It then waits for the voltage and current to reach acceptable levels before resuming charging.
The charge current is determined by the voltage applied between the ILIM and GND pins. This voltage is a 200mV reference, generated by an internal regulator. By connecting a resistor between the ILIM and GND pins, the current limiting point can be adjusted. The discharge switch is open when the battery voltage exceeds the threshold voltage (VTH) set by the resistor on pin VIN. This pin is also used as the discharge enable control pin.
