The MAX8860EUA27+T is an adjustable, low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator great for battery-powered applications that require precise output voltage regulation and low current consumption.

Designed for cost-sensitive applications, the MAX8860EUA27+T features an ultra-low dropout voltage of 210mV at 100mA and 250mV at 600mA. The quiescent current is only 4μA in low-noise, 1X mode and shutdown current is 0.15μA. The device includes other features, such as an active-low power-good (PG) output, an enable pin (EN) with an adjustable threshold, and soft-start. This dual-channel LDO consists of both a 1X and 2X low-noise regulator. The 2X rail supplies 2.5V, 3.0V, or adjustable outputs. The 1X rail supplies 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.0V, or adjustable outputs.

The MAX8860EUA27+T is ideal for applications such as cell phones, digital cameras, and PDAs, where space is limited, the current consumption must be kept low, and the accuracy of the regulated voltage is important. This device includes a plethora of protection and safety features, such as an overtemperature protection, an overcurrent protection, an undervoltage lockout, an overvoltage protection. The MAX8860EUA27+T also includes an additional enabled pin that allows for an adjustable enable threshold, a power-good output, and a soft-start feature.

The MAX8860EUA27+T application field includes Li-ion and Li-polymer battery-powered applications requiring a low-quiescent current, high-accuracy supply. Its 2X output provides 2.5V, 3.0V or adjustable outputs and its 1X output supplies 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.0V or adjustable outputs. It is also capable of powering TFT LCD displays that require logic levels of 2.5V or 1.8V. The device can also be used in other battery-powered applications, such as cellular phones, portable music players, or GPS systems.

The MAX8860EUA27+T working principle is simple. The device is placed in a circuit in between an input voltage source and a load. When the enable pin (EN) is driven low, the device will enter a shutdown mode, reducing the quiescent current to a very low level. When the enable pin (EN) is driven high, the device will enable and act as a linear voltage regulator. The reference voltage of the device is set by a dedicated, external resistor divider. Regulation will occur if the output voltage, as sensed by an output voltage sense voltage, is greater than the reference voltage by a predetermined amount. The internal error amplifier will compare these two voltages and issue a signal to the internal control circuitry, which will then adjust the power MOSFET output current accordingly to decrease the voltage. This cycle will then repeat until the desired output voltage is reached.

The MAX8860EAU27+T is a fantastic device for a variety of low-quiescent current, high-accuracy linear voltage regulator applications such as cell phones, digital cameras, and PDAs that require a low-dropout voltage of 210mV at 100mA and 250mV at 600mA.
