MAX8903EETI+T Application Field and Working Principle

PMIC (Power Management IC) is a key component in various embedded applications, such as mobile phones, tablets, wearables and other IoT devices. Battery charger ICs are a common type of PMIC, which convert input power from AC adapters into charging power for Li-ion, Ni-MH, and Ni-Cd batteries. The MAX8903EETI+T (hereinafter referred to as MAX8903) is a single-chip solution for battery charging, released by Maxim Integrated.

Features of MAX8903

The MAX8903 is a highly integrated and cost-effective solution for battery AC adapter charging. It integrates many features in a small package, such as input charge current control, thermal fold back, safety timers, reverse current protection, battery temperature monitoring, and more. In addition, it can work with a wide range of AC adapters, including adapters complying with USB, USBC, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 specifications.

Block Diagram of MAX8903

The block diagram of the MAX8903 is shown in Figure 1. As can be seen, it is divided into two main parts: the power stage and charging stage.

Power Stage

The power stage of the MAX8903 consists of a synchronous buck converter, a boost converter and several switching drivers. When the MAX8903 is powered up, the buck converter receives a voltage from the AC adapter and regulates it to 5V, which is then supplied to the boost converter. The boost converter then steps up the voltage from 5V to 5.9V, which is used to supply power to the battery.

Charging Stage

The charging stage of the MAX8903 consists of several control circuitry and analog devices, such as a power-on reset (POR), charging-safety timer, charge-current limit, over-temperature protection, and more. The POR initializes the registers (RAM File) of the MAX8903. Then, the charge current limit sets the maximum current that can be supplied to the battery. The safety timer limits the total charging time, and the over-temperature protection shuts off the charging process if the temperature reaches a certain level.

Working Principle of MAX8903

The MAX8903 has two working modes, namely, constant voltage mode and constant current mode. In constant voltage mode, the MAX8903 supplies a constant voltage (5.9V) to the battery until its voltage reaches the fully charged voltage or the charging process is terminated due to a safety timer. In constant current mode, the MAX8903 supplies a constant current (limited by the current-limit pin) to the battery until its voltage reaches the fully charged voltage or the charging process is terminated due to a safety timer.
