MBR6030R Application Field and Working Principle

Diodes are used for rectification - allowing current to flow in one direction only. Single diodes like the MBR6030R have a range of applications where rectification is necessary including surge protectors, charging systems and power inverters.

These are essentially voltage regulator diodes and use a basic principle to control the flow of electricity. In practice, when the voltage is at or above the forward voltage rating (Vf) of the diode, current will flow. However, if the reverse voltage rises above the breakdown voltage (Vbr) of the diode, any excess current will be diverted. The exact breakdown voltage varies between different products and should be checked before use as this is an essential parameter.

Working Principle

The design of the MBR6030R means that with a normal forward voltage, up to 6 Amps of current can be passed. With applications where large currents are present, this diode is an ideal choice. In addition, the maximum reverse voltage rating is up to 600V, giving this rectifier a wide range of use.

The working principle of the MBR6030R is based around its ability to measure the forward voltage and once it hits Vf, a small current is passed. This process can be described as ‘switching on’ the diode, which allows current to flow. However, if the reverse voltage is applied and the Vbr is exceeded, the diode will act as a closed switch, preventing any current from passing and diverting it away.
