The MCP1631HV-330E/SS is a MOSFET pre-driver and integrated high side N-Channel MOSFET with a fixed output voltage and a wide input voltage range. The working principles of MCP1631HV-330E/SS is simple and elegant. The device consists of an active highside MOSFET switch to generate the output voltage, a MOSFET pre-driver to operate the high side switch and a logic control circuit to monitor and adjust the switching frequency, control the pre-driver, program slew rate and monitor the input voltage. When an input voltage is applied, the logic control circuit open the MOSFET switch to begin switching and the gate of the MOSFET switch is opened to allow current to flow through it. The current then flows through the inductor and the output filter capacitor and the output voltage is developed across the capacitor. During the switch ON-time, the logic control monitors the current through the switch and adjusts the switching frequency by varying the on or off time, or both, to maintain the current and hence the output voltage. During the switch OFF-time, the inductor will build up a magnetic field and the current flows through the inductor and discharges the output filter capacitor to maintain the output voltage.

TheMCP1631HV-330E/SS also integrates protection features to ensure the device operates safely under a wide range of environmental conditions. It offers programmable current limit and thermal shutdown and both overtemperature and undervoltage lockout. The device can also be enabled and disabled via a logic input. The integrated MOSFET pre-driver ensures the fast turn-on of the highside MOSFET at the initial state and thus provides much better current suppl during transients than a normal, low on resistance MOSFET.
