MCP79410T-I/ST is a highly integrated, low power, and programmable real-time clock (RTC) device. The device includes an integrated oscillator and capacitive elements to lower external components count. The RTC time is programmable with a resolution of 1 second. The MCP79410T-I/ST device includes a Stopwatch Counter and a General Purpose Counter (GPC) internal to the device. However, a GPC must be able to function as a timer to fulfill the needs of the user.The MCP79410T-I/ST consists of several parts which are interconnected together to create an efficient and powerful clock device. The main parts of the device are the Chip Select (CS), the Digital Interface (DI), the Clock Control (CC), the Real Time Clock (RTC), the Counter/Timer, and the Wake-up circuit.The CS line controls whether the MCP79410T-I/ST device is enabled or disabled. When the CS line is HIGH, the chip is enabled and when it is LOW, the chip is disabled. The DI is a digital interface which is used to communicate between the device and the host system. The CC line is used to control whether the RTC portion of the device is enabled or disabled. When the CC line is HIGH, the RTC portion is enabled, and when it is LOW, the RTC portion is disabled.The RTC portion of the MCP79410T-I/ST device is an oscillator which uses an external 32.768 kHz crystal to provide the clock signal. The external crystal supplies the clock signal to the RTC portion of the device, which is then divided down to a 1 second tick rate. The RTC portion includes a 64-bit counter which stores the time and date information. The time is stored in a format that is compatible with the Gregorian calendar, which is a widely used calendar system.The Counter/Timer portion of the MCP79410T-I/ST device is a dual counter/timer which can be used to generate periodic time signals or counters.
