Clock/Timing - Real Time ClocksReal time clocks are devices that measure the current time and date and are used to track the passing of time. The MCP79412T-I/MS is a highly integrated real time clock (RTC) with Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) and I2C interfaces that is specifically designed for 8 and 16 bit microcontroller systems.The MCP79412T-I/MS provides a full-featured timekeeping solution, including calendar, alarms and periodic wake-up timers. It also offers an on-chip clock oscillator, counters and a programmable watchdog timer (WDT). The device is suited for any applications that require accurate timing and date information, such as real-time clocks, smart meters, alarm/security systems, medical equipment, networked home entertainment systems, automotive and industrial applications.The MCP79412T-I/MS incorporates a 512-byte battery backed EEPROM, which allows storage of user and device specific data such as settings, constants and calibration coefficients, even when the main power supply is not available. All of the settings, including the time and date, are easily configured with only a few simple commands. A programmable backup supply voltage of 3.3V allows the device to retain time and settings during power interruptions by providing a power backup source on power-failure events.The MCP79412T-I/MS is also capable of timekeeping operations with an external crystal oscillator in order to obtain high accuracy. An external crystal resonator can be connected to the crystal oscillator pins (X1 and X2) for more precise timekeeping operations.The device is offered in RoHS compliant packages for surface mount (SPI and I2C) and socketed applications. It is operated over a wide single supply voltage range of 1.8V to 3.6V. In operating mode, the device requires a voltage of 3.0V to 3.6V, while the backup supply input (Vbat) requires a voltage of 1.9V to 3.6V.The MCP79412T-I/MS provides a complete system solution allowing the replacement of multiple standalone COT products. It is protected against ESD events, supplies accurate time keeping data, and provides a push button reset, thus eliminating the need for any external devices.The on-chip temperature compensated crystal oscillator ensures that the device operates at room temperature, typically within ±3 ppm for an exceptionally low deviation from the nominal frequency across the entire operating range of -40°C to +125°C.The MCP79412T-I/MS also offers a selection of option bits that can be used to enable a variety of features such as automatic reset upon power-on, LED blink patterns, controlling the output frequency of the WDT, and enabling square wave outputs. The device is factory calibrated to offer accurate clock and alarm accuracy of +/- 2 minutes / month, at room temperature. It also provides an advanced power management system with active, idle and off modes, enabling it to reduce current consumption and extend battery life.The MCP79412T-I/MS features an enhanced I2C protocol that allows the user to have faster data throughput, with speeds of up to 400 kHz available. It also supports multiple master-slave features, allowing each master device to initiate transfers without disturbing other components in the system. In addition, the MCP79412T-I/MS has dynamic supply voltage recall capabilities which enable the device to monitor and compensate for supply voltage fluctuations.
