They contain various elements that work together to monitor the power supply and protect the circuit from damage due to voltage spikes, under voltage and over voltage conditions. The MIC1232N is such a product; it contains an Internal Voltage Detector (IVD), a Time Out Detector (TOD) and a Power-On Reset Generator (POR). The Time Out Detector (TOD) monitors the input voltage and warns of prolonged voltage issues. The Internal Voltage Detector (IVD) senses the voltage at its VIN pin and outputs a logic-high signal at its OV/UV pin. This signal is used to indicate under voltage and over voltage conditions and is thought to be accurate to within 1.0 +/- 0.2V. If the voltage remains outside the normal range for more than one second, the TOD will trigger.

The Time Out Detector (TOD) senses the voltage at its VIN pin and outputs a logic-low signal at its OV/UV pin. This signal is used to indicate prolonged undervoltage and overvoltage conditions, and the TOD is thought to be accurate to within 1.0 +/- 0.2V. If the voltage remains outside the normal range for longer than one second, the TOD will trigger.

The Power-On Reset Generator (POR) is used to reset and protect an integrated circuit or other device in the event of a power-on surge or brown-out condition. The POR senses the voltage level of the VIN pin and then generates and outputs a reset signal. This reset signal is used to reset the integrated circuit or other device.
