MIC2211-FOBML-TR Application Field and Working Principle

The MIC2211-FOBML-TR is a micro power CMOS Low-Dropout (LDO) voltage regulator with integrated power MOSFET, high precision on-chip voltage reference, current limit, power Good monitor and over-temperature protection. This LDO is specifically designed for microprocessor core applications and provides the fastest transient response to regulate the output voltage accuracy within 10mV at full load.

It is suitable for input voltages up to 6V, allowing for simple and efficient data processing. The integrated power MOSFET allows for higher current output with less drop-out voltage compared to traditional LDO designs. The MIC2211-FOBML-TR has a current limit of 170mA with on-off capability offers fast load-transient response and fast reverse current protection when there is a fault on the output. It also offers over-temperature protection and improved noise immunity for sensitive analog applications.

General Working Principle

The MIC2211-FOBML-TR is an adjustable linear voltage regulator capable of providing very low drop-out with high supply current. It uses an integrated power MOSFET to provide efficient current regulation even in highly dynamic loads. The device is built around an N-channel MOSFET and a precision voltage reference. The regulation is provided by the MOSFET, which is controlled by an internal comparator, whose reference is the internal voltage reference.

The operation of the device is based on adjustability. The adjustable power MOSFET is protected from output shorts, over-load and over-temperature situations by an internal Current Limit and Thermal Shutdown circuit. The latter provides the necessary protection against overheating caused by tinel damping or any circuit fault.

The output voltage is adjusted via external resistors. The output voltage can be adjusted in two different ways. It can be adjusted by connecting two resistors between the adjust pin and ground, or by connecting a single resistor between the adjust pin and VDD. This adjustment method allows fine-tuning of the output voltage.

Applications

The MIC2211-FOBML-TR is well suited for portable applications due to its high efficiency and low-dropout operation. The device can also be used in applications where high current is required in spite of a low input voltage. Typical applications for the MIC2211-FOBML-TR include microprocessor core supplies, portable instrumentation systems, cell phones and battery powered applications.

In addition, its low drop-out and fast line/load transient response make it excellent for applications requiring very tight regulation such as RF power supplies, portable instruments, and SMPSs. The integrated protection features such as thermal shutdown, current limit, and power Good monitor also make the MIC2211-FOBML-TR a good choice for applications with high output ripple and/or large load transients.
