Working Principle of the Microchip 2214-DNBML-TR Voltage Regulator

The 2214-DNBML-TR is a high precision, low current voltage regulator. The regulator is based on the traditional LM317 linear regulator IC. The regulator IC contains an internal positive voltage reference, error amplifier and a series pass transistor which are all typically connected in a circuit configuration as shown below.

The input voltage is applied to the input terminal of the regulator IC. The voltage reference is connected to the output terminal and the two are compared in the error amplifier. The error amplifier compares the voltage reference with the input voltage and produces an error voltage.

The error voltage is then fed to the series pass transistor. If the voltage reference is higher than the input voltage, the error voltage will cause the voltage across the series pass transistor to increase, which in turn increases the current through the load.
