MIC29500-3.3BT is a high quality 3.3V linear regulator designed to provide a dependable, low-noise power supply source to high-current digital, voltage-sensitive, and audio/video components. The small, 8-pin thin-shrink small outline package (TSSOP) makes the MIC29500-3.3BT easy to integrate into tight, crowded circuit boards. The standard use of widely available and lower cost surface mount components also saves space, allowing for greater function density.

The MIC29500-3.3BT can deliver up to 500mA output current. It is available in 8-pin TSSOP, SO-8, and MSOP packages and is offered in 3.3V and adjustable output versions. The device features a logic shutdown mode, internal current limit and thermal shutdown for protection and also includes Soft-Start and Power Good indicators.

The working pricipal of MIC29500-3.3BT is based on a linear voltage regulator\'s pass element — the series pass transistor. It is a three-terminal device connected between input (VIN) and output (VOUT) as shown in figure 1. The transistor can be either a bipolar junction transistor (BJT), an n-channel MOSFET (NMOS), or a p-channel MOSFET (PMOS). When the output voltage, VOUT, is regulated, the series pass transistor acts like a variable resistor, handling all of the current needed to keep the output voltage constant. This is done by sensing the output voltage and adjusting the value of the control or gate voltage (Vg) of the pass element to regulate VIN.

The MIC29500-3.3BT is also equipped with a low dropout regulator (LDO). LDOs are essentially linear regulators with an exceptionally low (less than 1V) dropout voltage. Dropout refers to the voltage difference between the output and input voltage. With an LDO, this voltage can be as low as 300mV, allowing the regulator to operate with very low inputs relative to the output voltage. This implies that it can operate efficiently while sourcing direct currents. With its Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) pass element, the MIC29500-3.3BT is fast and reliable, and it has a high power/current rating, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications.

MIC29500-3.3BT comes with several protection features. It has an over-temperature protection which shuts off the regulator when the temperature exceeds its set limits. This protection is important to protect the device from excessive power dissipation from over-current events and external shorts that may occur unexpectedly. The device also has an over-current protection circuit which shuts off the device when the current draw is too high or about to exceed its maximum safe rating.
