1. Describe
The MIC2954 is a high efficiency regulator with very low dropout voltage (typically 40 mV at light load, 375 mV at 250 mA) and low quiescent current (120 µA typical). The quiescent current drop of the MIC2954 is only slightly increased, extending battery life. Key features of the MIC2954 include reverse battery connection protection, foldback current limit and automotive load dump protection (60V positive transient). The MIC2954-07/08YM is an adjustable version that includes an error flag output to warn of low output voltage, usually due to battery input errors. This can also be used as a power on reset. A logic-compatible shutdown input allows the regulator to be turned on and off. The device is pin-bundled as a 5V output or programmable from 1.24V to 29V using two external resistors. The MIC2954 has two voltage tolerances, ±0.5% max and ±1% max. Both are guaranteed over a junction temperature range of –40°C to +125°C.

6. Application Information
A 2.2µF (or larger) capacitor is required between the MIC2954 output and ground to prevent instability due to oscillation. Most types of tantalum or aluminum electrolytics are sufficient; film types will work, but are expensive and not recommended. The electrolyte for many aluminum electrolytes will be around –30°C, so solid tantalum is recommended for operation below –25°C. The important parameters of this capacitor are an effective series resistance of about 5Ω or less and a resonant frequency above 500kHz. The value of this capacitor may be increased without limitation. At lower output current values, less output capacitance is necessary for output stability. This capacitor can be reduced to 0.5µF for currents below 10mA or 0.15µF for currents below 1mA. Adjusted the MIC2954-07/-08 to run the error amplifier at lower gain for voltages below 5V, so that more output capacitors are required. A 5µF (or larger) capacitor should be used for a worst case load of 250mA at 1.23V output (output shorted to feedback). The MIC2954 will remain within the specified minimum 1mA load. When setting the output voltage of the MIC2954-07/-08 version with an external resistor, The current through these resistors can be included as part of the minimum load. The MIC2954 should place a 0.1µF capacitor between the input ground input and the AC filter capacitor if the wire is longer than 10 inches, or if a battery is used as the input.
