The MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR is a member of the MIC52XX family of precision low dropout linear voltage regulators. Features

The MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR is designed to provide a regulated 3.0V output voltage at up to 500mA of load current and only consumes 370 μA (typical) of quiescent current. It features a low 0.1Ω (typical) dropout voltage, low output voltage noise of 0.05 mVrms, and a fast transient response of 1.2 μs. The MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR’s high PSRR and low output impedance makes it suitable for low noise and low disturbance power sources. The device is also very compact in a SOT-23-5 package and offers a high degree of protection, including input undervoltage protection, output overvoltage protection and output current limit protection.

Working Principle

The MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR is a linear voltage regulator. It works by regulating the input supply voltage and delivering a smooth, regulated output voltage. The main component of this linear voltage regulator is a voltage regulator circuit which contains an amplifier, comparator and bandgap reference. This voltage regulator circuit has two inputs – the incoming supply voltage at the input terminal and a reference voltage it compares it to. In the MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR, this reference voltage is set to 3V. When the voltage at the input terminal is above 3V, the regulator begins regulating. It reduces the difference between the input voltage and the reference voltage by providing a path to ground. The output voltage is therefore held at 3V. If the input voltage drops, the regulator begins to increase the output voltage in order to maintain a 3V output.

The MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR has a low quiescent current and low dropout voltage, which means it is able to maintain a high efficiency of operations, even at very low input voltages. It also has a very fast transient response and a low output noise of 0.05 mVrms that makes it well suited for applications where power distribution is at a premium. Finally, the MIC5205-3.0BM5-TR has protection circuitry built in so it can safely operate with a wide variety of input and load conditions.
