Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are used to effectively control the various power supplies and associated power stages of modern electronic devices. This can allow devices to accomplish a required level of performance while consuming minimum power, thus contributing to the energy conservation goals of today. The MIC5016YWM is a high-performance, low-power N-MOSFET driver integrated circuit (IC) from Micrel Semiconductor that is used in a variety of applications.
The MIC5016YWM is a PMIC, specifically classified as an Gate Driver. It is used in a wide range of systems, from mobile computing platforms and battery-powered electronic products to hard disk drives and industrial control systems. The working principle of the MIC5016YWM is fairly straight-forward. The MIC5016YWM uses a regulated input voltage to control the output voltage through its integrated MOSFET driver. In operation, the output of the MIC5016YWM is constantly cross-referenced against the PWM input signal to determine the duty cycle of the MOSFETs. When the duty cycle is high, the MOSFETs are turned on and the output voltage is high. Conversely, when the duty cycle is low, the MOSFETs are off, and the output voltage is low.
The MIC5016YWM also has a low off-state power absorption, which can further reduce current consumption in certain conditions. This is achieved by using an integrated MOSFET driver with a built-in over-voltage protection feature. This feature dynamically adjusts the output voltage of the device before it reaches the turn-on threshold of the NFETs and NTETs. This reduces the amount of power consumed in standby mode and improves system efficiency.
