The TVS – Diodes transient voltage suppressor (TVS) is a device for the protection of electronic circuits from excessively high voltage transients. It helps to protect components in electrical and electronic devices from damage caused by electrical overstress (EOS), which occurs during surge in voltage. MLCE16A is a new generation of ultra-low capacitance transient voltage suppressor (TVS) devices, which provides industry leading ESD protection and excellent clamping performance for severe high-voltage transient events.

The MLCE feature a built-in high-speed zinc oxide ZnO surge capability of up to 500 V and low clamping voltage. It can protect data lines from 5 to 16V during a surge. It has a fast response time, operating speed less than 1 ns and high reliable under severe surge conditions. The ultra-low capacitance also minimizes signal distortion on high frequency data lines and ensures that the protected circuit remains unaffected.

Application Field

MLCE16A offers surge protection for industrial and safety applications, such as over-voltage protection, power supply hold-up, clamping voltage suppression, audio-video protection, and in appliances. It can also be used in sensitive electronic systems such as computers, mobile phones, smart grids, medical devices, smart home systems, automotive accessories, etc. It is also suitable for providing over-voltage protection for circuits with high-speed switching.

Working Principle

The MLCE device operates on the principle of capacitive couplings. When exposed to voltages higher than the threshold voltage, built-in capacitors create a voltage differential between the anode and cathode terminals. The differential voltage is then harnessed to reduce the surge potential to a safer level for the system.

In operation, the transient voltage reaching the MLCE terminals is absorbed by the capacitors coupled between anode and cathode forming a low-resistance path of current flow. This results in the rapid suppression of the transient. The internal resistance of the device increases as the voltage exceeding the clamp voltage. This reduces the current flow and provides more protection to the device since the low clamp voltage ensures that the clamp voltage will not exceed Vcc.
